Happy May, Mythies!

This week was spent coding! I think I covered this before, but the difference between “writing” and “coding” may not be evident to some.

  • Writing is where I put down all the dialogue and narration in a scene, with some “stage notes” – little comment lines like “here’s a shot of Tara looking angry” or “there’s a transition here that looks like a sliding block puzzle.” I send that to the beta readers to see if it flows well, follows continuity, and is funny enough.
  • Coding is where I take that script and put it into Ren’Py format. I do this by copying/pasting the script the beta readers got, then replacing the character names with their Ren’Py identifiers and changing the stage notes into actual code. “Shot of Tara looking angry” becomes something like “bg ch004s001-37”.

There’s a lot more to it than that, obviously, but that’s the basic gist of those two steps in creating a scene. The third step (rendering) is pretty self-explanatory – I have a list of what all those images from the coding step mean (ie – “bg ch004s001-37 – Tara looking angry”) in a second file, and I use that file as a checklist for what renders to do.

I also forgot that I had to shoot a whole set of side images for Jodi, so… I did that.

There was a little real-world bumpiness this week as my cat (the last remaining furbaby) has been… possibly sick? I’ve been losing sleep over it, even though he’s not showing any of the “big concern” signs. He hasn’t lost his appetite, he’s not acting or moving differently… but he’s peeing a lot. I mean a lot. At least three times as much as usual. My vet has been busy, and I didn’t think it was anything we had to take him to the (very expensive) emergency vet hospital for, so we had to wait until yesterday to finally get him checked out. The vet seemed… generally unconcerned about his urination, saying something akin to “yeah, my cat’s the same age and she’s peeing a lot, too.” But they still got some samples for labwork and now I’m waiting to hear back on that.

I hope it’s nothing too serious because I can’t afford another pet crisis – emotionally or financially. We’re still paying off the surgery for the cat we lost two years ago and the treatment for the doggie we lost last year. No more pets after this… my heart can’t take it.
