Heyo, Mythies! Let’s wrap up 2023!

First things first (I’m the realest): The update image has nothing to do with Mythos. Morgana asked me to make a render of her and Gale from Baldur’s Gate 3 together, so… I guess it’s technically a commission? She didn’t pay me because we have the same bank account, so that’d be weird. She made me steak, though. 

Anyway! By now, many (most?) of you have played through Chapter Five. Combined with Chapter Four, this is the final bit of story you get before the conclusion of Book One. Note that a hotfix for Chapter Five has been dropped; make sure to grab that from the downloads page, if you haven’t already. This hotfix patches up a weird bug where your name would be reset to the default (Kylie or Kyle) if you make a certain choice in Chapter Five related to kissing someone. If you didn’t put in a custom name for your character, you don’t have to worry about downloading the hotfixed version.

Chapter Six is going to be big, but it may not feel as big if you’re not interested in seeing all the endings. There are fourteen endings, and then the epilogue (so sometimes I just say it’s fifteen endings), but it’s possible you only want to play through your ending and then be done with it. If that’s the case… you won’t be seeing most of the content in Chapter Six, and that’d be a shame. But for people who don’t want to replay the game over and over to see all the endings, fear not: There’s going to be a mechanic built into the game that will allow you to see all the endings without having to start over from the beginning! Thus, there’s really no reason to not see how things play out in the endings you didn’t get.

Note that there is only one canon ending, which will be the ending that Book Two and beyond will be based on. The game will clearly let you know when you’ve gotten the correct ending.

I usually take a week or two off after updates drop, but not so with this one. I’ve already outlined Chapter Six, and even did one of the achievement renders already (I was particularly inspired and had to do it while the thought was in my head). While Chapter Six is going to be big, I really want to work hard on it and get it out as fast as possible. This is the culmination of all I’ve been working on, and the ideas are going to be coming out fast and furious.

While I work on Chapter Six, we’re going to have our final Book One editions of “Ask the Cast” and “Ask the Dev”. I don’t want to open those up just yet in case there’s some people who have yet to get into Chapter Five. I also plan on at least one more instalment of “Tales from Mythos”, this one featuring Area 42 back when they were called “The Gargle Blasters” and still had their previous guitarist. I was going to include it with Chapter Five but I wanted to get that out without any further delays.

Now on to some personal life stuff. The past two weeks have been like a huge unloading of stress from my shoulders. Of course it was great to get Chapter Five dropped, but it also put the holidays in my rearview mirror. There was one other enormous burden that weighed on me which I am now free to talk about. I didn’t want to mention this before because I know how people can quickly jump on the “dev trying to get sympathy” train, and I didn’t want to attract that… or attract any undue concern.

Roughly two months ago, Morgana found a lump in her breast. Unfortunately, for some reason we couldn’t find an open appointment to get her a mammogram until December 26th — and even then, it was an hour’s drive away. So I took the 26th off work and we basically spent the holidays worrying about her health. People may have noticed me being quieter than usual in Discord and other places. It wasn’t just me hammering away at the game or dreading the holidays, but the two of us generally spending more time together as we feared the worst. Now, however, I am extremely pleased to announce that the lump is nothing to worry about (other than it sometimes hurting); Morgana is cancer-free!

There is one last thing that’s going to take up some of my time, though: MAGFest is next month. We’ve gotten most of our cosplays together (at least one of them will be a re-wear of one I wore last year), but that’ll still be roughly a week where we’re spending our time down at National Harbour and I won’t be able to do anything for Mythos. I may even have to skip a weekly update!
