Happy Friday the 13th! I survived MAGFest. Barely. Yes, we’re going back next year… but we’ll definitely be getting a hotel room. Driving an hour to get home after spending a day partying at a convention is rough for my old ass.
The first scene of Chapter Four is completely written! It was tough as hell, because there were eight characters in it. Unlike the Gala scene, all of these characters were in one place, so it was far harder to coordinate. It’s probably the hardest scene in the whole Chapter, so I’m glad I got it out of the way… though it was tough making it the first thing I worked on right after the holidays and then the convention.
If you look at the Chapter Four achievements, you’ll see that it’s four unnamed renders assigned to four different girls. These aren’t set in stone! When I get to the point that I do the achievement renders, I’m going to pick the top four most popular girls based on the poll going on in the Nine of Swords Discord. The four right now just happen to be Tara, Mara, Kylie, and B, but that could change. If you wanna influence who gets a Chapter Four achievement render, join the Discord and cast your vote! I haven’t even decided how to earn those achievements, yet.
I do know who the renders for the Chapter Five achievements will be, and I also know how you get every one of them. The reason there’s so many is that there’s at least one for each ending. I’ll let y’all stew on that.
That brings me to my final point – I’m looking for a beta reader. This reader won’t be the same as the beta testers. For Chapter Three, I did a mostly-imageless beta test before doing all the renders, but I realize that clicking through a visual novel and reading text isn’t as good as just… reading a document. So to test the story before coding it, I want one or two beta readers that will read the script of the scenes (which also have notes about what certain renders will show) to make sure it flows well, the information is clear, and the jokes land. This reader can also be a tester (at their discretion) but it won’t be required. They will be required to be on the Discord server. They also need to be really into the game so they can give feedback from the point of view of someone who cares about the story. Because of that, I’m not doing some big announcement call-out for beta readers, but tucking it in this update – the kind of person I need for this role will have to be the kind of person who’s keeping up with the Friday Updates. If nobody comes forward, I’ll just have to hope the old method of tesing works out. The reader (or readers, maybe) will be reading the scenes as I finish them, so it’ll kinda be them seeing how I work on things as I go. Checking my punctuation and spelling isn’t really required, since that’s more a tester thing.
